What to Expect at NAMA
NAMA is not a nightclub or a tourist attraction. It's a living community institution. Here's what first-time visitors should know.
A Historic Brownstone
NAMA occupies a landmark brownstone at 107 W 130th St. Performances typically happen in the basement and main floor of the historic building.
Intimate & Community-Centered
This is an intimate venue โ not a large concert hall. Expect to be close to the musicians, surrounded by music lovers, locals, and community members.
Open Jams Welcome All
Wednesday's Lion's Den jam is open to all musicians. Bring your instrument. The house band will make space. No audition required.
Affordable Entry
Most events are $10โ$35. Many community nights are free or donation-based. NAMA believes music should be accessible to everyone.
Volunteer-Powered
NAMA is run entirely by volunteers. Consider donating or becoming a member to help sustain this extraordinary organization.

Visitor FAQs
Got questions about visiting NAMA? Here are answers to the most common things first-time visitors ask.
Do I need to make a reservation to attend?
For most weekly events like The Lion's Den and Monday Nite Jams, you can walk in. For special events and galas, we recommend checking the event listing and RSVP'ing early as capacity is limited.
Is there a dress code?
No strict dress code โ come as you are. Many visitors enjoy dressing up a little to honor the spirit of Harlem's musical tradition, but jeans and casual wear are completely welcome.
Can I bring my instrument to the Wednesday jam?
Absolutely โ that's the whole point! The Lion's Den is an open jam. The house band leads the session but all musicians are encouraged to sit in. Just show up, introduce yourself, and play.
Is there parking nearby?
Street parking is available on W 130th St and surrounding blocks. We strongly recommend taking the subway (2/3 to 125th or A/C/B/D to 135th) as Harlem street parking can be limited on event nights.
Are kids welcome at NAMA events?
Many of our afternoon and community events are family-friendly. Some evening events may have age restrictions depending on the programming. Check individual event listings or call us at (212) 281-1350 to confirm.
How can I support NAMA beyond attending events?
You can donate to the Brownstone Renovation Fund, become a member, or volunteer with the organization. Every contribution โ large or small โ helps sustain 120+ years of Harlem music legacy. Visit our Support page to learn more.
